泰戈尔在台湾的代言人:糜文开
印度,有点熟悉又遥远神秘的国度。古远的天竺故事和印度歌舞人人皆有印象,但印度现代的历史和文学却又似乎相当陌生。泰戈尔可能是大家最容易想到的现代印度作家了:身为亚洲首位获得诺贝尔文学奖的诗人,泰戈尔在二十世纪前半的中国名声响亮,不但曾亲访中国,与徐志摩、林徽因的交往让人津津乐道,梁启超也为他取了个中文名字「竺震旦」。郑振铎在1922年译出了他的《飞鸟集》,更是传颂一时。
但在战后的台湾,五四诗人已远,《飞鸟集》因郑振铎「附匪」而名列禁书书单,泰戈尔的名声仍得以维持不坠,必须归功于糜文开。台湾市面上虽能见到郑振铎的《飞鸟集》,例如江南、辅新、汉风等出版社的版本,但都不署译者名字,且书名一律都改为《漂鸟集》,也是因为糜文开的缘故。至今两岸新译本不绝,但无论译者是谁,中国至今仍以《飞鸟集》为主流,台湾还是继续称为《漂鸟集》,两岸各有定译,也是颇为有趣的现象。
糜文开(1908-1983)是江苏无锡人,中华民国外交官,1940年代长驻印度,也在印度国际大学哲学系进修,与印度渊源甚深。1948年,他在印度大使馆长夏无事,和同事容宝琛两人偶然发现郑振铎的《飞鸟集》不全,且误译处不少,于是重译此书,改书名为《漂鸟集》,理由是「漂鸟」比「飞鸟」更符合印度崇尚云游漂泊修行者的意象。序中说当初翻译此诗集纯为「消夏」,初无出版之计划,他比较急于出版的是1948年上半年已经译完的《奈都夫人诗全集》。为了这本诗集,他不但跟作者奈都夫人合照,夫人也写了几句给中文读者的话,又请了驻印度大使罗家伦写序,一切准备妥当,寄去上海商务准备出版。谁知1949年时局大乱,上海商务说无法出版了,糜文开羁留香港,只好自己开起出版社来。出版社叫做「印度研究社」,专出糜文开和女儿糜榴丽两人译作。原本计划出五本书,第五本即《泰戈尔诗总集》,包含已译完的《漂鸟集》和《新月集》,不过后来只出了前四种,《泰戈尔诗总集》并未在香港出版。
糜文开1953年来到台湾,继续外交官生涯,也在大学教印度文学。1955年,应朋友要求,在香港大学《生活月刊》连载早已译出的《漂鸟集》,许多读者为之惊艳,三民书局遂在1956年出版《漂鸟集》单行本。此后「漂鸟」成为台湾的定译,尽管台湾还有周策纵在美国译的《失群的鸟》和罗青的《单飞的鸟》,但都无法取代《漂鸟集》在读者心中的地位。糜文开与糜榴丽父女合译的《新月集》也继《漂鸟集》后出版。糜文开又陆续与夫人裴溥言合译其他五册泰戈尔诗集,1958年出齐七册。此时距离他在新德里消夏时翻译《漂鸟集》已有十年,他自己漂泊港台,历经丧偶与新婚,境遇忧喜交织,恍若隔世,也见证了战后文人流离迁徙的动乱时光。
《漂鸟集》和《新月集》风格完全不同。《漂鸟集》是精致玲珑的浮光掠影,短短一两句人生哲理沁人心脾,的确足以「消夏」;《新月集》却是童趣十足,亲子情深之作,几首叙事诗有情有景,难以忘怀。每一本译作都与译者的生命历程交织而成,今天重看糜文开翻译的泰戈尔诗作,似乎还能感受到1948年印度的那一个漫漫长夏呢!

序
要了解一位大诗人的诗,须先了解他的生平及思想,诗哲泰戈尔的诗,虽然清新俊逸,但是你若不了解他奥妙哲学的全部,便不能有真切的了解,而且有好些诗你会完全不知所云。泰戈尔自获得1913年的诺贝尔文学奖金以后,他的诗风靡全球,不到十年,也引起了中国新文坛的狂热,尤其在1924年他来华的前后,有许多文艺工作者抢着译他的书,许多书店抢着出版他的译本。他的好多重要著作有了中译本,而且同一著作有的有着几个中译本,真是盛极一时。但是因为是赶时髦抢译,有的译本,未免草率,以致错误百出。就是认真从事的,也因了解不足,还是译得不妥贴,甚至到处出岔子。拿郑振铎所译《飞鸟集》为例,他译这集子时,已有人选译过,他拟全译,但化了许多时间全译后因无把握,仍删节为选译本,删去难译的诗达六十八首之多。译成后又由叶圣陶、徐玉诺二位仔细校读过,而且他又给泰翁写传记,可谓对泰翁有专门研究的人了,但是他仍免不了草率,免不了误解。Stray Birds译为飞鸟便不能妥贴,有好几首误解了原意,第六十八首Wrong cannot afford defeat, but Right can.译为「错误不会招失败,但是真理却会。」竟是原意的反面,真要使人吃惊。至于草率到dusk错认为dust,于二八一及三一四等首均把这字一再译为「烟尘」,三二五首中的cling误认为climb而译为「爬」,三二四首中的tract误认为track而译为「辙迹」,二一八首的shadowy认为shady而译为「荫凉的」,不胜枚举,真是太不负责任了。至于三十八首中的limbs译为「唇」,一四四首中的sings译为「叹」,或者是未照原文译,或者是被手民所误。
我在国内时,曾陆续看过好多泰翁作品的中译本,及有关泰翁的理论及传记,到印后六年间,又把他重要著作的英文本逐一阅读,我虽有把奈都夫人的诗和迦里陀莎的剧本译成中文的奢望,但从未想起要把泰翁的作品重译,因为翻译泰翁作品的有很多人是名家,是我向所信赖的。
新德里夏季的炎热,颇不宜于文字的写作,照例有钱的人都上山避暑去了,不去避暑的人也只上午做些事,下午便家家闭户,行人绝迹,闹市一变而为死市,若有人敢驱车出门巡礼一番,一定说这里是一座鬼城,因为一切动物也都成蛰伏状态,连一条狗一只猫也看不到,飞鸟走兽,都已蛰伏在隐蔽的地方了。我虽从未避暑,但到新德里后,夏季也总看点闲书消遣。今夏宝琛兄看中了我桌上的Stray Birds,读得很有兴趣,我便把郑译《飞鸟集》找给他,劝他试把郑译所缺六十八首译出来,因为这六十八首大半是这书精彩的部分。宝琛兄要我帮着一同译。我们把郑译与英文本对着,发现郑书已译的部分,错误很多,于是我决定在办公之后以消闲的态度,参考郑译,把全书三二六首逐一译出,我每天译上二三首,或四五首,宝琛兄便帮我缮正,觉得这样消夏,精神很愉快。英国诗人夏芝曾遇到一位印度医生对他说:「我每天读了泰戈尔的一句诗,世上的一切苦痛便立刻忘了。」我也真的把炎热都忘了。
我对泰戈尔的哲学有相当的理解,懂得他对宇宙万物的看法,懂得他「死是生命的一部分」的道理,懂得他「丑是不完全的美」、「恶是不完全的善」的意思,懂得「真相」、「假相」的分别,以及他对「上帝」的认识等等,所以译起来并不觉得十分困难,兴趣浓厚时,在盛暑中一天译上十多首而不倦,因此不到两个月,我便把全书译完了。
泰翁这本诗集,可说是隽品中的隽品,很受中国读者的欢迎,对中国文坛的影响很大,曾引起冰心女士等专写小诗的风气。但其中有好几首,简直不是诗,只是格言,前举第六十八首便是一例,我们虽然都译出了,但决不可当做诗读。有几首诗原文可以有两种解释而都合于泰翁的观点的,我便采取与郑译不同的一种。
可是书名应该怎样译法呢?郑译「飞鸟」固不妥贴,一般译作「迷鸟」更不适切,如译「偶来的鸟」又嫌用字太拙,我拟译为「漂鸟」,但不知是否贴切,我便设法找孟加拉文原作来研究,但他孟加拉文著作的书目中,没有相当这本诗的书名,特地向几位印度学者请教,他们也回答不出来,我看到他第二首诗便是向往于漂泊者的话,更想到古代印度学者修道的四阶段,最后是云游期,尚在林栖期之后,而印度两大史诗至今尚有流浪诗人挨户来歌唱。可知印人对云游的重视,对漂泊者的尊敬了。这书第一首以漂鸟象征经过森林里修道后的云游者确甚适切,再经查动物学书,知唱歌的莺类,便是漂鸟之一种,与诗句完全符合,于是决定译作「漂鸟」。我把我这个意见告诉印度朋友,也获得好些人的赞许。
郑振铎等在二十多年前已给我们做了不少开路的工作,纵有误译,也应原谅,像大诗人泰戈尔的作品,有很多中译本已绝版了,而且到今朝也应该是重新把它们有系统地精译出版的时期了。但在今日的出版条件中,颇觉困难,我译这本书,也只是为了消夏,并不是为了应市。现在只记下我翻译的经过,留作纪念,将来有兴致时,不妨再拿出来读读,修改几首,润饰几字,以求格外完美,以后如有闲暇,或者也将再译几本,自然有出版的机会,也不妨就印它出来,至于对绝版书的补救,我想可以精选泰戈尔的代表作,包括诗歌、戏剧与小说,出一本集子,以飨读者。可能时我当尽力试他一下。
